Useless Charlie For more than two decades, from 1940’s-1960s, two of the most loved entertainers in Hollywood were the great ventriloquist comedian Edgar Bergen and his dummy named Charlie McCarthy. Crowds loved Edgar and Charlie and they made millions of friends together. During their acts, Charlie sat on Edgar’s knee and drew lots of laughter as he spoke with funny wit and wisdom. But it wasn’t really Charlie’s humor and knowledge that made him a beloved entertainer. It was Edgar’s hand that moved Charlie and his voice that made him speak. When Edgar died, Charlie died too, because he longer had neither his master’s hand nor his master’s voice. After Edgar’s funeral, Charlie was laid in a box where he was unseen, unheard, unloved and forgotten. The relationship between Charlie and his master, Edgar, is the same as our relationship with our Master and Lord Jesus Christ. In Acts 17:28, it says In Him we live and move and have our being. Without God’s hand on our lives, without His words in our mouths, without His Holy Spirit in our souls, we would all be just “dummies”. From God’s point of view, we would all be useless without Him. We would be unseen, unheard, unloved and forgotten. Life lived without God is meaningless. If not for Him, you and I would just be “useless Charlies”. What would we be- and where would we be- without our God? Today, let’s take time to consider all that God has done and meant in our lives- and praise Him for giving us life! Bro Chito |
